Personal Defense Weapons
There are a few things you should ask yourself if you are planning to purchase and carry a personal defense weapon:
• Is it legal?
Many types of weapon are not legal to carry without a permit (and some are not legal in any circumstance). Some weapons, in particular certain types of knife, are technically legal, but in practice you may face legal scrutiny for using them.
•What kind of training will I need?
You should seek training or instruction on the safe and effective use of any weapon that you plan to carry. This will make you confident in its use during a stressful situation and reduce the likelihood of injuring yourself or innocent bystanders.
•Is it effective?
There are a number of personal defense weapons available, and their actual effectiveness varies. Remember that nothing can be 100% effective in every situation, and be wary of products that claim otherwise. It is important as well to keep in mind that any weapon can potentially be taken from you and used against you.
•Am I prepared to use it?
If you are not comfortable with the idea of using your weapon it will not do anything protect you. Will you not only be able to operate your weapon in a stressful situation, but are you prepared mentally and emotionally to potentially cause harm to another human with it? There is a difference between being willing to harm someone and wanting to; however, remember that your attacker is willing to use your weapon against you. Carrying a weapon in order to bluff a potential attacker is extremely dangerous.
