Personal Defense

When it comes to protecting oneself, many people opt for training in martial arts or other personal defense training. These approaches are great for conditioning yourself physically and the exercise and confidence they build will help you even if you never find yourself in a violent encounter.

However there is more to personal defense than physical preparedness. Fighting back is the last thing you want to do if you can help it - and not just on principle. Especially when weapons are involved (knives are particularly dangerous in this regard), oftentimes the " winner' of a fight finds himself with just as many injuries as the other person, and if you end up injuring or killing your assailant you may face legal difficulties. There have been many cases where people were charged with assault or murder after acting in what they felt was self defense.

Being prepared mentally is just as important if not more than being prepared physically. Victims of violent crime are often distracted or fail to take simple safety precautions. Criminals look for the unwary and the weak - and no weapon or amount of training can protect you from the attacker you didn' t know was there.
