Knives

Carrying a knife for defense is not a decision to be taken lightly. It takes a significant amount of training to be able to defend yourself with a knife and if you are not trained in its use you are merely providing your attacker with a weapon to use against you. You must also be prepared to physically stab another human being - regardless of how much of a deterrent just having a knife can be, it would be far better for you to be unarmed than have a weapon that you are not willing to use. Many people prefer to carry knives since they can be useful in everyday, practical situations.

There are many legal considerations about carrying a knife for defense - many types of knife are illegal to carry without a permit and even if your knife is legal, knives are often viewed as offensive weapons. Even if you act purely in self defense, you will be far more likely to be perceived as someone who was looking for an excuse to stab someone.

If you decide you must have a knife for defense, then there are some considerations you should make. First, research your local laws to determine what sort of knives, as well as what methods of carrying them are legal. If you knife folds, then you should be able to unfold it quickly and with one hand, every time. The unfolding action should be smooth and consistent.
