If you' ve decided to purchase a firearm for home or self defense, you should know a few basic things. The most important is gun safety. Safety is important with any weapon, and you should take basic gun safety classes and shooting lessons. Most shooting ranges or gun stores will be able to recommend somewhere you can do this. If you are untrained in the use of your gun it will only become a liability and you could injure or kill yourself or others.

The most commonly recommended type of gun for home or self defense is a revolver. Revolvers are simple and have less points of failure than a semi-automatic handgun.  If you are not interested in shooting recreationally, a revolver is most likely the best choice due to its simplicity.

You should fire several hundred rounds through any gun you buy at your local shooting range (after you take the gun safety and shooting instruction classes) This will not only familiarize you with its operation, but ensure that the gun is in good working condition. In any situation you may be required to use it, you will most likely be under a lot of stress and you should be able to rely both on your own abilities and that of the gun.

 If you have children it is absolutely vital that you educate them about gun safety. You cannot rely solely on your own guns being locked away, and if your child encounters a gun outside your home you will want him or her to know the dangers.
